How to Apply Perfume (The Right Way)

Wearing perfume isn’t just about smelling good, it’s about making it last and blend naturally with your body. Here’s how to apply it the right way, so your scent stays with you throughout the day.

1. Start with a clean base

Perfume clings best to freshly cleansed skin. The ideal time to apply it is right after a shower, when your pores are open and your skin is slightly damp. This helps lock in the scent for longer.

2. Moisturise first (with unscented lotion)

Dry skin tends to absorb and fade perfume quickly. Use an unscented moisturiser before applying your fragrance. It gives the perfume something to stick to and slows down evaporation.

3. Focus on pulse points

Your body heat activates perfume. Apply it on warm areas like:

  • Wrists
  • Neck
  • Behind the ears
  • Inside the elbows
  • Back of the knees (especially in summer)

These spots help the scent develop naturally and last longer throughout the day.

4. Spray (don’t rub)

Spraying and then rubbing your wrists together is a common mistake. It breaks down the top notes and can change the scent. Instead, spray once or twice and let it settle on your skin naturally.

5. Avoid spraying your clothes

While it might seem like a safe option, spraying perfume on clothes can leave stains — especially with oil-based fragrances. It also stops the scent from reacting with your skin, which is key to how it unfolds.

6. Know how much to use

With perfume, less is more. 2–4 sprays are usually enough. Too much can overwhelm others (and even you), especially in closed spaces.

7. Reapply only when needed

If your fragrance fades after a few hours, it’s fine to reapply — just don’t layer it over sweat or other scents. Dab a little on your pulse points again, or use a travel-size atomiser for on-the-go touch-ups.

8. Store it properly

Heat, light, and humidity can break down a perfume’s ingredients over time. Keep your bottles in a cool, dry place — away from direct sunlight or your bathroom shelf — to keep the scent fresh and strong.

Bonus Tip:

If you want your perfume to last all day, try layering: use a matching body wash or lotion from the same scent family before applying your fragrance. It adds depth and helps your scent stay put.
